Welcome to Alice in Omaha! When I moved to this part of the country back in 2007, the world—and especially this city—looked much different. Many friends and colleagues of mine back in New York City could not understand why I would want to leave the exciting, glamorous center-of-the-universe place known as my home and thriving career for the past 15 years. But so many things were ticking, most notably my biological clock. I was 37 and unmarried, well unmarried in a traditional sort of way. I was, in fact, married to my job and my career. Working as a magazine editor in the fashion industry was a dream-come-true, but it didn't come without many strings attached including long hours and tons of devotion to being super social and always up for cocktail parties, A-list events and late-night shenanigans all across the globe. It was a jet-set life filled with celebrities, caviar, champagne....it's like a reference out of Robin Leach's Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous (who I incidentally did meet and party with at his Park Avenue home at a decadent Cristal-flowing brunch!). But what I wanted more than anything in the world was not another pair of custom-made Manolo Blahnik stilettos (yes, that was a customary gift in my old job), but a baby, a family, a life a lot less glamorous and well, normal. I wanted to be in a place that was family friendly, affordable, with a strong work ethic value and honesty. Lucky for me, Omaha had strangely always been on my radar and after some thoughtful deliberation, it was quickly followed by a hasty and impetuous decision to move practically sight unseen. From the time I inquired about first visiting Omaha, I moved three months later. I quit my job, came to Omaha for a visit (yes, in that order) and bought a house all in the course of one week. One week that changed the whole trajectory of my life.
And now I'm here. Thirteen years ago I was in my office in New York telling my bosses that my trip to Omaha was a success and that I had bought a house and I was in escrow. Three days prior I had never even set foot in the state of Nebraska and now I was a homeowner of a 1929 built three bedroom Tudor in a historic neighborhood of Omaha.
What I have learned in the last 13 years is that I am still a content creator at heart, someone who loves when friends ask for advice on where to shop, eat, travel. I did that professionally for so many years, I figured it's time to share my favorite things with everyone. So this is the start of Alice in Omaha and my thoughts and advice on pretty much anything and everything. Welcome, and thanks for checking in!
